The Behavioral and Electrophysiological Effects of Temporal
Distortions in Environmental Sounds

When we hear a familiar environmental sound event (e.g. car crash, filling water bottle, etc), we try to collect more information until we predict the source event.  Temporal quality of the sound is as important as semantic and physical characteristics while identifying auditory events. Temporal distortions in the sound sequences can be tolerated to some extent. Although such thresholds are well studied in music and speech, there are no studies that investigate the effect of temporal distortions in environmental sounds. We used environmental sounds with a cause and effect part to study how different temporal distortion modalities on auditory event recognition performance.
